Deplar Farm Iceland: A Northern Lights Lodge Review

Deplar Farm is a 13-room luxury lodge by Eleven Experience on Iceland’s remote Troll Peninsula, a converted 15th-century sheep farm offering a 37-degree geothermal pool, heli-skiing, northern lights viewing and all-inclusive dining for a maximum of 32 guests.

You have been driving for ninety minutes through the mountains of the Troll Peninsula. The road follows deep fjords and passes small fishing villages. Every turn shows you a landscape that feels older and wilder than anything you have seen before. Then the valley opens. You see a cluster of black timber buildings sit so quietly into the hillside that you might miss them if you blink.

This is Deplar Iceland.

What This Place Used To Be

An ultra-luxury adventure lodge at Deplar Iceland.

The main building was a sheep farm in the 15th century. The same Icelandic family owned it for generations. In 2014, the Eleven Experience group found the abandoned farm. They spent two years turning it into a luxury lodge. You can still see the original stone walls in the common areas. The grass roofs follow the old building methods of the region. Today, Deplar Iceland is a 13-room retreat. It gives you Arctic adventure and deep, quiet rest in equal measure.

What You Will Not Find Here

You will not find a reception desk. You will not find a gift. You will not find a dress code. You will not find a television in most rooms. You will not find a bill at the end of every meal, because all meals are included. You will not find crowds, because only 32 guests can stay at once.

What you will find is silence. Not the awkward kind. The kind that lets you hear your own breath.

The Rooms: Thirteen Ways to See the Mountains

Landscape with a series of small, dark, gabled structures at Deplar Iceland.

Every room at Deplar Iceland faces the mountains. No two rooms are the same. The largest is Grettir, named after a Norse hero. It has a king bed, a fireplace, a private balcony, and a bathroom with a sauna and a soaking tub. The Gallery Suites have lofts with hammocks. You can lie in the hammock and watch the light change on the peaks.

Even the smallest rooms feel spacious. The design is simple: wood, stone, wool, and large windows. There is sheepskin on every chair. The soap is Aesop. The bed is soft. You will sleep better than you have in months.

The Geothermal Pool: Warm Water, Cold Air

An indoor pool at the Deplar Iceland.

The pool is the heart of Deplar Iceland. It is fed by the same hot water that runs beneath the entire country. The temperature stays at 37 degrees Celsius no matter what the air does. In winter, the air can drop to minus 15. You float with steam rising around you while snow lands on your face. In summer, the midnight sun glows pink, and you swim at 2 AM.

The pool is indoor and outdoor at the same time. You swim through a glass wall to go from one to the other. There is a swim-up bar. You do not have to leave the water to order a drink. You can sit there for an hour, watching the mountains, and feel your shoulders drop.

Beyond the pool, the spa has a sauna, a steam room, two flotation tanks, and a sound bathroom. There is also a Viking sauna ritual: you heat up, then run outside and jump into a tub of near-freezing water. It is not comfortable, but unforgettable.

The Long Time: Eating Together

Alpine relaxation room overlooking the mountains featuring people at Deplar Iceland.

The dining room has one long wooden table. It seats all 32 guests. There are no private tables. You sit next to people you have never met. By the end of dinner, you know where they are from and why they came.

Chef Garoar Garoarsson cooks dinner. He was Iceland’s Chef of the Year in 2018. The lamb comes from the farm next door. The Arctic char comes from the river you saw on the drive in. The vegetables grow in geothermal greenhouses. Nothing is frozen. Nothing is flown in.

Breakfast is salmon, eggs, pancakes and granola. Lunch is soup and sandwiches, packed for you to take on your adventure. Dinner is three courses, with wine from the cellar. All of it is included. You never sign a check.

From May to August, the sun stays above the horizon. You can hike at midnight. You can kayak on the fjord at 11 PM. You can watch whales feed in the golden light of 2 AM. The hills are green. The air is cool. You forget what darkness looks like.

Summer activities include hiking, sea kayaking, fly fishing for Atlantic salmon, horseback riding across lava fields, whale watching and even surfing in the Arctic Ocean. You wear a thick neoprene suit, and it is worth it.

Winter: The Snow That Never Stops

Snowmobilers traversing a snowy mountain range at Deplar Iceland.

From December to April, the snow is deep. The valley gets some of the highest snowfall on the planet. You can heli-ski on mountains that no one else has touched. You can snowmobile across glaciers. You can snowshoe, fat bike, or cross-country ski. Almost every clear night, you see the northern lights.

Heli-skiing at Deplar Iceland is world-class. The guides know where the powder is deep and safe. You do not need to be an expert. They match the terrain to your ability.

The Bar, the Cinema, the Recording Studio

A rustic luxury bar located at Deplar Farm, Iceland.

After dinner, guests gather in the bar. The counter is made of driftwood that floated from Siberia. There is a pool table, darts, and a small stage. Some nights, guests play music. Some nights, they just talk.

There is a cinema room with a big screen and Netflix. You can watch a movie if you want. Most guests do not.

For musicians, Floki Studios is a short drive away. Famous artists have recorded there. You can book the studio and play. It is quiet, isolated and inspiring.
